What is WaveHunt?

WaveHunt is a high-tech manhunt using a moving wireless computer network on the streets of Dublin, Ireland.

Inspired by the DefCon Running Man competition, WaveHunt is a fun event for Ireland's technical community that will test your network and direction finding skills, and possibly even win you some prizes!

Entrants will have three attempts (each an hour long) to locate a hidden, moving wireless access point. Entrants will require a Wi-Fi equipped laptop/PDA and suitable wireless network detection software.

Entrants must use the data & graphs from their laptop/PDA to track and positively identify the carrier - the person carrying the wireless access point.

The customised wireless access point will be serving a small website. On this website is a question. This question, combined with knowledge of who the carrier is, will give entrants the answer they need to win. Winners will be decided by the fastest times to report the correct answer over three varying runs of the competition.

The venue for this unusual event is Dublin City Centre - Stephen's Green park, Temple Bar, and for the final game, indoors at Stephen's Green Shopping Centre!

What are the prizes?

  1. First Prize
  2. Second Prize
  3. Third Prize

When: Saturday, March 24th 2007 at 12:00pm - 17:00. Keep an eye on this site for any changes!

Equipment: A laptop or PDA with a battery life of over an hour, a wireless network card, and suitable software for wireless network detection.

Recharging: There will be breaks between the three game runs to recharge batteries. :)

External antennas: Unfortunately, these are forbidden. This is to keep the barrier to entry low. The use of high-gain directional or omnidirectional antennas would be unfair and restrict entry to just a couple of people lucky enough to have access to them.

Cost: There is a charge of just €10 to enter WaveHunt. Companies and teams welcome!

Further details, including definitions of the game area, will be provided on the day.
